Wonder Movie

Grant Request:

$1,620.00 + ($500 – $1,000)*

Description:

The 4th, 5th and 6th grade teachers are planning a field trip to see the movie “Wonder.” If you haven’t read the book, it is an amazing story of perseverance, friendship, fitting in and acceptance. The author has described the novel as a, “meditation on kindness.” And says, “Every reader will come away with a greater appreciation for the simple courage of friendship. Auggie is a hero to root for, a diamond in the rough who proves that you can’t blend in when you were born to stand out.”

Over the past few years, this book has been read to our students as a read aloud, small group novel or independently. It has sparked many conversations about empathy, being perceived as different and acceptance. We were so excited to hear that the movie was coming out, and would love to take the students to see it as we can continue many of these important conversations in reading, writing and character education.

*Addendum Request: Additional $500-$1000 for a pizza lunch (proposed by the 4th, 5th and 6th grade teachers on 11/9/17)

We truly want to make the most of this experience. Since 5/6 will miss their official lunchtime due to the movie time, we would like to assign groups consisting of 4th, 5th and 6th graders and use guided discussion questions to talk about the movie while munching on some pizza. In the true spirit of SEL, we love the idea of the three grade levels having time together to process the message of the movie and discuss it with one another. As with any field trip, students can choose to bring their own lunch from home.
